Senior Team Effectiveness

Often, senior team development is an informal process. As organizations grow in size and extend their reach, the implementation of formal strategies to develop leadership teams is of increasing strategic import and will be a competitive differentiator in the future.

Before: Senior Management Team in Disarray after Merger

"As CEO of a new corporation formed from the merger of two regional companies, I faced pulling together an organization which was operating within an industry turned upside down by deregulation. The changing business environment created a scarcity of management talent suitable for the emerging challenges and issues. Performance in this new arena would require an entirely different set of skills for leaders. Ensuring the company had the necessary management talent now and in the future presented an understandable challenge.

"I knew RHR had an excellent reputation for team development at the top levels, so I engaged them to examine and review the strengths and development needs of the company’s newly merged senior management team. I asked them not only to help me build a team that could function immediately, but to anticipate the leadership characteristics that would be required in the future."

After: Structured Development Process Builds an Aligned Senior Management Team

"We began by conducting in-depth conversations with the CEO concerning the leadership needs of the business. One-on-one interviews were held with 15 senior executives in addition to confidential interviews with senior peers and critical subordinates to provide 360° feedback data. This information, together with analysis by RHR consultants, formed the basis of a leadership developmental profile for each executive. We also provided a collective evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the management team. A Leadership Development Plan™ was created for each executive and coaching was provided where warranted.

"Today, the company has a more cohesive, more collaborative senior management team with improved leadership skills and greater ability to address the ambiguity and challenges presented by a changing industry. An awareness of individual leadership development issues and a willingness to address them are more visible and operative within the company culture."

Quotable:

"It's been great working with RHR on how to take very different people with very different work styles and to blend us as a team... but we don't blend so well that we lose the benefits of being different."
