Each CEO takes a unique route to the top role, built on the foundation of his or her own very personal experiences. However, looking closely, patterns can be discerned that may shed light on each of these individual’s ability to succeed in one of the world’s most demanding environments.
RHR International consultants have a highly developed understanding of the complexities of human nature, especially when taken in the context of the business world. This is particularly true at the C-level, where the majority of our practice takes place. With the collective knowledge gained from more than 65 years acting as trusted advisors to senior management leaders, we are uniquely qualified to examine the commonalities that set apart extraordinary Chief Executives Officers.
One observation our consultants have made is that time and again, most (if not all) CEOs experience a highly powerful and insightful moment (or series of moments) during their careers that cause them to think about themselves differently. An event occurs that forces them to look in the mirror and reexamine the leadership model they have used to that instant in time. These turning points change them personally and redirect their leadership path, strongly contributing to the type of Chief Executives they eventually become.
To explore this idea further, RHR decided to engage some of our trusted clients in conversation about the Moments of Truth theory. Did they agree? Could they recall such times during their career? What did this moment or that moment mean for them, and how did the incident change them?
Each of the leaders we talked to believe this idea resonates, though understandably, they related to it in different ways. Some could recall key turning points that immediately struck a chord. For others the process was more evolutionary, with the impact of their decisions only becoming clear as they grew into more senior roles. Notably, despite their different personal experiences, all agreed these moments had the potential to be powerfully constructive if CEOs could take the time to process and integrate them into their leadership development.
During our discussions, many enlightening stories emerged regarding what these executives took away from their individual Moments of Truth. Over the coming weeks we will use this space to explore these themes and share informative insights from both RHR International and the senior executive leaders we interviewed. I think you will find this series of posts provocative, instructive and immediately useful.
